Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Massive Evacuations Confirmed

The Philippines has been hit hard by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, which left at least two people dead and forced the evacuation of more than 1.4 million individuals.

Officials reported that the massive storm triggered extensive flash flooding, storm surges, mudslides, and destructive high-velocity gusts, prompting the relocation of millions of residents nationwide.

Extensive Damage and Rescue Efforts

In the town of Pandan, one of the worst-hit regions, disaster response teams documented floodwaters reaching the tops of houses and homes being swept away by the powerful currents.

Our team saved 14 individuals who were trapped atop a house engulfed in flood in a flood-prone area,” an emergency official explained. One resident also called in panic, reporting the roof of his house was about to be ripped off by the wind. We rescued him along with four family members.”

By Monday, officials confirmed two fatalities: one from drowning in Catanduanes and another who died when her house collapsed in eastern Samar.

Storm Intensity and Forecast

The intense storm was downgraded to a severe tropical storm early Monday as it crossed the Philippines’ largest island, home to the national capital.

Per meteorological authorities, its maximum winds decreased from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, but gusts were still reaching more than 275 km/h.

The cyclone is projected to continue weakening while heading north toward Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The national disaster response service indicated it was still working to evaluate destruction to infrastructure and homes.

Approximately thousands of shelters have been opened to temporarily house 92,000 families.

Recent Context and Climate Impact

Fung-wong struck shortly following another severe storm, that claimed at least 224 people and left dozens unaccounted for before moving on to Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Searches for the missing persons had to be suspended recently due to safety concerns to emergency personnel.

The climate crisis is causing cyclones more intense and frequent. Fung-wong is the twenty-first storm to impact the nation in 2025.

Researchers have found that the frequency of intense cyclones hitting the Philippines has risen by more than 100% in the past twenty years.

Global assessments suggest that severe weather events cause an average of US$3.5 million in damage to the country every year.

The nation’s leader issued a state of emergency on Thursday because of the extensive devastation caused by the prior typhoon and anticipated impacts from the new storm.
