This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Might Make or Break Your Relationship.

Consider this a test for those in enduring partnerships who appreciate horror films: Sit down with your partner and view Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie just made its online premiere on the Hulu service. Outwardly, it may seem like standard body horror, but beneath Together resides a intense meditation about how we choose to love one another.

A Debut Feature Delving into Partnership Complexities

Together is the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have been together for ten years. Having wed in reality in 2017, the actors infuse a special spark to their roles, expertly portraying both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.

The narrative commences when Tim and Millie transition from the urban environment to the rural area for her career. A familiar narrative setup, of course, but that’s primarily where the tropes cease. Together becomes as much a deep dive into the psyche of the pair’s relationship as it is a body horror flick.

A Paranormal Spark

While hiking near their new home, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim tumble into an hole in the earth. After spending the night there and managing to escape, a supernatural entity takes hold of the duo. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes far beyond typical partnership.

The whole movie is a gradually intensifying horror experience, interspersing elements of hallucinatory nightmares, gross (but tastefully done) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic interactions (sometimes in the middle of something horrific). Shanks weaves these elements together neatly and delivers them in a gradually swelling sense of impending doom.

Nuanced Portrayals

A great deal of Together is solely Brie and Franco, and they masterfully render countless layers to the characters’ relationship. Millie's sense of self and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a emotional and physical gap. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his reluctance to pursue anything but his floundering music career gradually emerges.

Tim, on the other hand experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve relocated rural and removed from his support system. He dreads the concept of totally forfeiting his individual identity in Millie. This fear is intensified by the reality he does not operate a vehicle and relies on Millie for transportation.

The film's most intelligent aspect in Together refrains from painting Tim or Millie the clear bad guy.

The couple grapple with the sort of issues that arise in most partnerships a decade in. Deep down, they still love one another. They share moments of joy, offer support, and open up at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their future together.

Allegory and Meaning

While the otherworldly presence in Together act as a metaphor for these anxieties of codependency and totally devoting oneself to another person, the symbolism avoids being clumsy or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a brilliant analogue to the relationship narrative. Both the frights and the fights serve the other in harmony.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that single viewers have understood the narrative as a powerful case for staying single. Meanwhile, some couples who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them resolve their issues.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own reaction could act as a telling indicator of how you think about commitment. Will the conclusion plant a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you see yourself in one of the characters and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your other half and say, “I’d do that for you”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can embark on at this very moment.

Together is currently playing on the streaming service Hulu now.
